WE compared notes, etc. As I know it, your Edens line started with William Eddins I (note spelling), who was born circa 1662 in Eng. and died 1732 in Spotsylvania Co., Va. His wife was Rebbecca Haws and they had 5 children (4 boys, 1 girl), all born (my estimate) during the period 1688-1695. Since no one knows when old William arrived in America, where his children were born has been a mystery. However, I feel old William arrived in America in 1719. in New Kent Co., Va. Per the book "Cavaliers and Pioneers" a William Eddins did arrive here in 1719 and I think it was this William Eddins. (The "!" after his name was originated by me 25 years ago so I could keep all the William Eddins straight). Therefore, all of his children most likely were born inEng. too. Most of this children went by the name Eddins, except son John who went by the name Edens. John was your ancestor. I have estimated that John was born circa 1690 and died during the period 1744-1748 in Manakintowne, King William Parish, Va. He was listed on the Huguenot cenus there in 1744, but wasnot there on the 1748 census. I feel he moved there from Orange Co., Va. about 1740. No one seems to know his wife's name, but I feel it was Elizabeth ( I dont know her maiden name). They had at least 2 children: son John Jr. (born circa 1716) and son Alexander (born circa 1719). Alexander was in Manakintown for the 1748 census, but wasnot heard of since. John Jr. was your ancestor. It appears that William Eddins I (born ca 1662) and his sons were in Spotsylvania Co. during the 1720's and in 1726 son John (born ca. 1690) was involved with some land dealings there. Where they lived became part of Orange Co. , which was formed in 1734. On a 1737 list of tithables for Orange Co., JOhn's 2 sons were listed with his brother, William Eddins !! (born circa 1688). By then John's wife probably was dead. John Jr. ( born ca 1716) apparently married circa 1742 in Orange Co.. His wife was Agnes (maiden name unknown) and they had at least 4 children, including sons James (born ca 1744), Alexander ( ca 1745) and John (ca 1748). Art Hall and you descend from Alexander. In 1748, where they lived in Orange Co., became part of Culpeper Co.. so apparently sons James and Alexander were probably born in Orange Co., while son Joh.n (born ca 1748) might have been born in Orange or Culpeper Co. Father John (born ca 1716) possibly moved the family to Buckingham Co., Va. about 1750, per Art Hall. Old JOh died there sometime after 1773. (NOTE: Art feels Alexander was born circa 1750 -- me a couple years earlier-- in Buckingham Co. In 1781 Alexander was still in Buckingham Co. and in their militia. During the period 1783-85 apparently he moved to Pendleton District, S.C., which later was renamed Pickens Co. Alexander's son, John, was born 11/6/1783 in Buckingham Co. and his sister Mary, was born there in 1782. I know of no Indian blood in this family. If there was some, it would have enerted the family with some females during the mid -1800's or later. In the 1907 Indian claims filed by Cherokee descendents, there were some Langford claims submitted, but they were all rejected. Those Langford's mostly lived in Georgia, with a couple from Tenn. MY own family submitted over 200 claims then and all were rejected. My great greatgreat grandmother was a full blooded Cherokee, but after marrying John Eddings the family never signed up on the various Cherokee census', so the US Govt ruled they had left the tribe and not entitled to any money in 1907. Even if they got some money it would have only been about $30. I guess this is about all I know about your family. I hope it helps some. Bob.
