Source: http://freedownload.is/doc/ocr-document-4492566.html My father was Leon Coke Hatton. He claimed to be a Choctaw. He was very proud of his heritage. He instilled in his children this same pride. He always claimed to be a direct descendant of Sallie Fletcher, who was a daughter of Captain Jim Fletcher who was 3/4 Choctaw and his wife, Nancy, who was a full blood. Captain Jim was born about 1764, in the Choctaw Nation in Mississippi. He was a sub chief in Greenwood LeFlore's District in the old Mississippi Choctaw Nation. He was one of the signers of the Treaty of Dancing Rabbit Creek which was signed on September 27, 1830 which provided for the Indians trading land in Mississippi for land in Oklahoma. He was one of the captains who were asked to lead his district of Choctaws from Mississippi to Oklahoma in 1833 which he did. He was well known as a respected member of the tribe. His marriage to Nancy resulted in 8 children the youngest of which was his daughter, Sarah (Sallie) Fletcher born in 1794 in Virginia. She married John Richmond Hoggard, a white man, who also was born in Virginia about 1794. Sallie died approx.1855 in Navarro County, Texas and John died approx. 1846 in Navarro County, Texas. Their marriage resulted in 9 children. Their daughter, Nancy Jane Hoggard, was born in Missouri in 1833. She married George Linney in Dallas County, Texas on November 5, 1851. George Linney was born in Kentucky in 1817. Nancy Jane died approx. 1872, in Bell County, Texas and George died after the 1880 Census in Coryell County, Texas. Between 1820 and 1833 there were a number of Choctaws who left Mississippi and moved to Kentucky and neighboring states because they did not like the treatment they were receiving from the U.S. Government in Mississippi. They also didn't want to move to Arkansas or Oklahoma where the Government intended to move them. This might have been one of the reasons why Nancy Jane Hoggard was born in Missouri. Also when the Choctaws arrived in Oklahoma to their assigned destination some of them didn't like what they saw and went on to Texas. The marriage of George Linney and Nancy Jane Hoggard resulted in 7 children. Their daughter, Martha (Mattie) Jane Linney, was born in Dallas, Parker County, Texas on March 20, 1865. She married George Painter Hatton on May 5, 1880, in Gatesville, Coryell County, Texas. George Painter Hatton was born in Texas on January 18, 1858. Martha died on October 14, 1899. It was on her son's, William (Bill), birthday. That always upset him a great deal. Martha was buried in Center, Oklahoma. Dad said they had no music at her funeral. He always wanted to take flowers and have someone sing "When the Roll Is Called Up Yonder I Will Be There." So, the last time we were there at her grave site we brought a recording of the song which we played and placed a beautiful bouquet of flowers on her grave. It was a nice little ceremony. George died April 14, 1926. He is buried in Stonewall, Oklahoma. Martha and George had 5 children. Their son, Leon Coke Hatton, was born on July 25, 1890 in Jonesboro, Coryell County, Texas. He married Katherine Copeland on May 22, 1919 in Roswell, New Mexico. Katherine Copeland was born on August 12, 1896 in Sherman, Grayson County, Texas. Leon died February 8, 1978 and Katherine died January 11, 1961. They both died in Albuquerque and are buried in Sunset Memorial Park. Dad lived with me and my family for most of the 17 years after my mother died. Their four daughters were:

Leona Kathleen Hatton, born February 27, 1920, in Las Cruces, New Mexico. She married John Earl Carroll in Bernalillo, New Mexico in 1937. Her next husband was Porter Kimmel. Her last husband was John Lucier. She died of cancer on September 28, 1988 in Albuquerque. She is buried in Santa Fe, New Mexico at the National Cemetery with her husband, Porter Kimmel.

Lourine (Totty) Lenora Hatton, born July 30, 1921, in Albuquerque, New Mexico. She married Julian Clarence Kelly in Bernalillo, New Mexico in 1937. Then she married Charles P. Walker in Albuquerque in 1945. Next she married Charles Turner. Next she married William Martin. Her last husband was George Taylor. I told her she was the Lana Turner of New Mexico. She was married seven times. She had five husbands. She married two of them twice. She died in an automobile accident on May 29, 1975. She is buried in Santa Fe, New Mexico at the National Cemetery with her husband, George Taylor.

Georgia Ann Hatton, born May 4, 1923 in Albuquerque, New Mexico. She married Joseph (Jack) Claude Mantz. They were married in Bernalillo, New Mexico in 1939. She died from cancer on June 11, 1989. She is buried in Santa Fe, New Mexico at the National Cemetery with her husband.

Helen Pauline Hatton, born April 25, 1930 in Prescott, Arizona. I married Marvin Millard Moseley on September 24, 1949 in Albuquerque, New Mexico. Marvin was born February 5, 1928 in Venus, New Mexico. We have two children, as follows:

Myra Lynn Moseley, born July 30, 1951 in Albuquerque. She married Gary Anthony O'Canna on August 21, 1972 in Albuquerque. Gary O'Canna was born in Trinidad, Colorado on March 20, 1948. They have three sons: Glen Wade O'Canna, born August 9, 1979; twins - Travis Gary O'Canna and Randy Ray O'Canna born Christmas Day, December 25, 1981. They were all born in Albuquerque.

Ray Marvin Moseley, born June 11, 1953 in Albuquerque. He married Mary Rodema Ashby on December 18, 1976 in Phoenix, Arizona. She was born in Phoenix on January 19, 1953. They have one daughter, Eva Katherine (Kate) Moseley born September 3, 1980 in Albuquerque. Second he married Barbara Lynn Winckler on June 26, 1993 in Albuquerque. Barbara was born on March 6, 1950 in Aurora, Illinois.

In 1896 when my father was 6 years old his family was living in Jonesboro, Texas. He said that one of his mother's sisters wrote her and told her she needed to go to Caddo, Oklahoma to register with the Choctaw Nation or she would lose her head rights as a member of the tribe. So my Grandfather Hatton loaded all the family in a wagon (they were only to be gone a short time). It was in the fall time of year about harvest time. So they left thinking they would be back to harvest; however, in Caddo my Grandmother, Martha Jane Linney Hatton, was recognized as a member of the tribe and was allotted a parcel of land. The family never returned to Texas. They lost their crop and everything they owned in Texas. (They were just renting the land and according to Dad they could have probably stayed there as long as they liked - so it was good they didn't lose any land in Texas). After my grandmother died, my Grandfather Hatton managed to lose the land she had received from the Choctaws. I don't know the details. My grandmother died in 1899 and her children were not recognized by the Dawes Commission in 1903 as members of the tribe. My father always thought he was a member until I ordered his father's testimony in 1972 from the Bureau of Indian Affairs in Muskogee, Oklahoma. He was shocked and dismayed to find out that his claim had been rejected and that he was not a registered member of the tribe.

My grandmother, Martha Jane Linney Hatton, died when my father was nine years old. So far as I know they didn't visit with her relatives much after her death. My father never mentioned them. He did talk a little about his Aunt Nancy Linney Leonard. About the only thing he ever said about the Linneys was they were short lived people.

When his father remarried, dad was 14. He ran away from home. He was gone for 7 years before he returned for a visit. After that he would stop by on occasion. His half brothers and sisters told me that when he came it was like a party. He was so much fun and told a lot of great stores. My father was very good natured and always smiling. His friends here in Albuquerque called him Happy or Hap Hatton.

After my father was discharged from the Army in 1919, he went to Spindle, New Mexico to visit his brother, William Brown Hatton and his family. There he met and married my mother, Katherine Copeland. He didn't go back to Stonewall, Oklahoma to visit until he received word that his father was dying in 1926. He said that he had a good visit with his father and he was glad that he went.

About 15 years ago my niece, Lorraine (Katy) Walker Price, was making pottery and wanted to exhibit as an American Indian craftsperson. She hired a genealogist who got her in touch with Bill Lane and that is how I was introduced to the FHL line.

Meeting the Fletchers, Hoggards and Linneys has been a great experience for me and I have thoroughly enjoyed our gatherings, researching and finding out about the various families in this line.

The Fletcher connection of the Fletcher - Hoggard family tree is comprised of two branches, one originating in Mississippi through Capt. James Fletcher , b.1767 (3/4 Choctaw Indian & a Choctaw Chief). The other connection is through Drury Fletcher, b. 1760s, a resident of Lee Co., Virginia. The two branches came together with the marriage of John Richmond Hoggard and Sarah Sally Fletcher, daughter of Capt James Fletcher and Nancy (Last name unknown). The daughter of John Richmond and Sarah Hoggard, Elizabeth Hoggard, married James C. Fletcher who was the grandson of Drury through Drurys son William. A son of Richmond and Sarah Sally, James Hoggard, married Sarah Fletcher , a granddaughter of Drury through his son James. Both lines have rich histories including other marriages of the Hoggards and the Fletchers giving rise to the common heritages of the Fletchers and Hoggards. Drury FletcherCapt James Fletcher Sarah Ann BenhamNancy (Unknown) William FletcherSarah Sally Fletcher Elizabeth (Unknown)John Richmond Hoggard James C. Fletcher MarriageElizabeth Hoggard James Fletcher Margaret Patterson Sarah Fletcher MarriageJames Hoggard Much of the early genealogical history of the Fletcher - Hoggard Family Tree was compiled by Ruth Fletcher Wiley, a resident of Weatherford, Texas, one of the original founders of the Fletcher - Hoggard forum. Many have contributed to the large amount of genealogical as well as historical information currently available by following the leads and promptings of Ruth. She has authored several books and short stories relating to the early days of the Fletchers and their descendants during the 1800s-1900s in Texas. One of her publications relates the story of Sarah Sally Fletcher Hoggard after which this website has been named. Another of the founding members, Bill Lane, has also published a book on his paternal line, Our Heritage, Descendants of John Baptist Lane from 1840-1985, by William (Bill) Patrick Lane (a descendant of the Linney branch of the family), 92pp. The first official meeting of the Fletcher - Hoggard family descendants, was held October 1999, in Weatherford, Texas, hosted by Ruth Fletcher Wiley, assisted by Helen Hatton Moseley and Bill Lane with 25 people attending. The next year (2000) Carolyn Linney Bruton and Marolyn Linney Fazekas, (twins) and Susie Linney Bell (all three sisters) hosted the Fletcher-Hoggard Family Reunion in McAlester, Oklahoma. The 2001 reunion was hosted by Jack and Sue Wright, in Austin, Texas. There was no 2002 reunion. The 2003, 4th annual reunion was held in Lubbock, Texas, hosted by Bill Lane. The 2004, 5th annual reunion was in Albuquerque, New Mexico hosted by Helen and Marvin Moseley. The 2006 annual Fletcher/Hoggard/Linney (FHL) family reunion was held April 20-22 in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma and was hosted by Sue Bell. Our next reunion will again be in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma, June 21-22, 2007. Our hostess will be Sue Bell. WHO WERE THE ORIGNAL FLETCHERS & HOGGARDS? Capt James Fletcher (1767 - 1850s) Some of us share our heritage with Chief (Captain) James Fletcher (3/4 Choctaw), a Mississippi Choctaw Indian Chief, who was married to Nancy(Last name unknown), a full blooded Choctaw. He was one of many tribal chiefs that signed the Treaty of the Dancing Rabbit Creek in 1830, which was the treaty that moved his people from Mississippi to the Indian Territory in Oklahoma. This was later to become known as the Trail of Tears. Capt James Fletcher and Nancy had several children: Ison, Nancy, Patrick, Riley, Winnie William, Sarah Sally and baby Fletcher who died at Boggey Depot, along the Trail of Tears. This Fletcher line descended from the daughter, Sarah Sally Fletcher, who married a white man, John Richmond Hoggard. Goodwill Drury Fletcher (1761-1817) Many of those participating in the Fletcher - Hoggard Family Tree also share their heritage through Drury Fletcher who lived in Lee County, Virginia during the early 1800s. He was married to Sarah Ann Benham. Not much is know of Drurys parents or where he came from. Current DNA studies are trying to find common heritages. Sarah Ann Benham came from a well to do family in the area.
