H. JONES at the cove, brought here Tuesday and tried yesterday. They were released on bond of $2500 each. Wednesday, August 16, 1882 Gatesville, August 15: Last night during a heavy rain and thunder storm in this neighborhood, PERRY LANGFORD, convicted of murder in the first degree and sentenced to life imprisonment, and JEFF WALDEN, convicted of horse theft, broke jail and it is supposed that they have made good their escape. The officers are now in pursuit of them, they are doubtful as to the recapture of Langford… ***** Perry Langford was eventually re-captured and sent to prison. While in prison he suffered greatly from TB and was released just before Christmas 1886. He died on 28 Dec 1886 at the age of 26. Sylvester (Ves) Howard was acquitted, but fled the area to avoid retribution. Perry, William, and Rufus Langford were all sons of Asa Langford (1820-1906) of Langford's Cove (today Evant), Coryell County, Texas. From my research, the murder of Jones and conviction of Perry Langford was really the culmination and the end of what had been a blood feud between the Jones' (and their extended relations) and the Langfords (and their extended relations) in Coryell/Hamilton counties. In about 1874/1875 Perry was ambushed and wounded while traveling down a "narrow country road." His right lung was wounded by one of the bullets, and he eventually contracted TB. The Langfords suspected the Jones' were behind the shooting of Perry. Throughout the years, the father, Asa, was the target of numerous ambush attempts. In one attempt on his life, his eight year old son (Little Jimmy) was shot and killed by a hooded mob. Although the Hatfield/McCoy feud of Kentucky gets all the press, frontier feuds in Texas throughout the 1870s and 1880s were numerous, bloody, and tragic. Unfortunately, the Langford-Jones feud of Hamilton/Coryell counties was no exception. Marc Gatesville, July 28 [Special.] The Dallas Daily Herald July 29, 1884 Last night, at Langford Cove, A. Langford and his 8-year old son were attacked by a mob. The boy was shot to death immediately and the father dangerously wounded. The cause cannot now be ascertained. Langford has long been considered a bad character, and he had many enemies among his neighbors. http://chroniclingamerica.loc.gov/lccn/sn83025733/1884-07-29/ed-1/seq-1/#date1=1880&index=4&rows=20&words=Langford&searchType=basic&sequence=0&state=Texas&date2=1890&proxtext=langford&y=14&x=15&dateFilterType=yearRange&page=1 The Dallas Daily Herald June 23, 1885 En Route for Burial Fort Worth, June 22 - [Special.] The body of H.J. I have been told that I am the last in my grandfathers branch of the Langfords. My grandfather was ASA GREEN LANGFORD. So far the only info I have is the following: Asa Green Langford b. 2/18/1902 in Deming, NM had 2 sons Donald Langford b. 1927 d. 2004, Harold Langford (my dad) b. 1930 d. 1974. I was the only child born for my dad. Donald had no children. Asa was married to Alma Vera. His mother was Rhoda Ann. I believe her last name was York. They are all buried at Green Hills Cemetery in San Pedro, CA. Asa was born in Deming, NM and had siblings: Christopher C. b. 8/7/1897 Indian Terr. I can not confirm this. In a family bible there is a name of a William and Rhoda Langford written in it. Since I know Rhoda was his mother, I assume she was married to William and I did see where someone stated that William Langford was the son of Asa Langford and his second wife Rebecca Morris. If you have any information regarding my ancestry I would greatly appreciate it if you would share it with me or advise as to where I might be able to locate more information.
