Annual Family Reunion Seeks to Find Ancestors and Descendants of Drury Fletcher and Capt. James Fletcher

The annual Fletcher/Hoggard/Linney (FHL) family reunion was held Sept 24 and 25th in Albuquerque, New Mexico and was hosted by Helen and Marvin Moseley. This annual event is in its fifth year and was attended by members from Arizona, Colorado, Kansas, New Mexico, Oklahoma and Texas. Good food, informative meetings, plenty of visiting and sharing of family stories and pictures were enjoyed by all.

This group has an interesting heritage shared between two Fletcher lines. One branch comes from Drury Fletcher of Washington Co., Virginia circa 1760 and the other from Capt. James Fletcher, Choctaw Indian Chief of Mississippi circa 1770. The shared heritage is shown in the pedigree chart below.

The Fletchers and the Hoggards enjoyed each others company since their early days in Virginia and south eastern Kentucky (around 1810). Both families moved to Missouri around 1825 then on to Texas around 1840 acquiring land in the early Peters colonies in northern Texas. There were many marriages between the two families as they moved from place to place. Many of the Fletchers stayed in Texas acquiring land in Bell, Parker, and Denton counties. Others moved to Oklahoma along with the Hoggards around 1880 seeking to acquire land in Oklahoma Indian Territory because of their Indian heritage through Capt. James Fletcher.

The following names are associated with these families:

Our annual meetings serve as a catalyst to do more extensive research to find the descendants, as well as to seek the origins of both Drury Fletcher and Capt. James Fletcher. Research includes looking through historical records and most recently using DNA analysis to find related Fletcher ancestors through a Fletcher DNA project sponsored by the Fletcher Family Research Bulletin. Most of the attendees take on research assignments and review their findings at subsequent reunions.

Our next reunion will be in Calera, Oklahoma (June 3 thru 5, 2005). Our research focus will be Capt. James Fletcher. Our meeting will be held at the Choctaw Inn in Calera.  The rates are very reasonable (Sunday thru Thursday $59, Friday and Saturday $69, and Suites $89). This is a new Inn and very nice.

We are calling this gathering the FHL Family Tour 2005.  Our main family members come from the Fletcher, Hoggard and Linney lines thus the initials.  We welcome others and all descendants to join us.  We always have a great meeting and enjoy ourselves.

This meeting will concentrate on the "Land of Our Ancestors".  At the present time, we are planning to meet at the Bryan County Heritage Center, visit the Caddo Museum Cemetery and the Boggy Depot Picnic Area (where we plan to have a picnic).   We will take a tour of Ft. Washita and visit the Tishomingo Chickasaw Library.  We will have many discussions on Captain Jim and other family ancestors and members.
