JOHN H. WINDER. Manuscript LS: "J.H. Winder", 1p, 7«x3¾.
Provost Marshall, 1862 May 5. In full: "Mrs. Langford states that her
husband has gone off & left her destitute with two children to support and
since his departure-(four weeks ago) has given up the house where she lives.
Please attend to the matter." Confederate General John Winder was
commander of Confederate prisons east of the Mississippi. Captain Henry
Wirz, the commanding officer at Andersonville prison was the only Confederate
military officer tried, convicted and hanged after the Civil War. His execution
was carried out on November 10, 1865. Ironically, Winder, Henry Wirz's
superior at Andersonville, who had more responsibility for conditions within the
prison than Wirz, died of a heart attack before the war ended, on February 7,
1865. Lightly creased. Folds touch signature. 2 pinhead-size file holes at
blank right. Irregular lower edge.
