General Notes (Husband)
Elias Hollingsworth Spray
Elias Spray was born about 1803, probably in Ohio. His parents, who were practicing Quakers, were James Spray and Naomi Hollingsworth formerly of the Carolinas. The Caesars Creek Monthly Meeting of Clinton County, Ohio, shows that on 28 Sep 1811, James Spray, and children Benjamin, Rebecca, Elizabeth, William, Elias and James, were released by request (William Wade Hinshaw, Encyclopedia of American Quaker Genealogy. 1936, reprint ed., Baltimore: Genealogical Publishing Co., 1969, Vol. 5, p.205).
On 24 Dec 1822 in Clinton County, Ohio, Elias Spray and Mary A. (Polly) Harris “both of Clinton County” married. John Hazard, Justice of the Peace, officiated. (Clinton Co., Ohio, Marriages, 1817-1854. Vol. 2, p. 85. FHL 056894.) Polly was not a Quaker and on 24 April 1823 at the Caesars Creek Monthly Meeting, Elias Spray was "condemned" because he "married contrary to discipline" (William Wade Hinshaw, Encyclopedia of American Quaker Genealogy, Vol. 5, p.205). On 25 November of the following year, he was "disowned for disunity" (Encyclopedia of American Quaker Genealogy, Vol. 5, p.205). There is no evidence that he ever again associated with the Quakers.
The 1830 Census of Shelby Co., Ohio, enumerates Elias Spray, age 20-30 years, in Turtle Creek Twp., in Shelby Co., Ohio, with a wife, age 20-30 years, one daughter, age 5-10 years, and two sons, under 5 years. (1830 Census of Shelby Co., Ohio, Seattle Public Library #1830, Roll 140, Turtle Creek Twp., p. 46.) a Benjamin and James Spray are listed on the same page. Elias Spray is also mentioned in connection with the early settlement of Van Buren Township in Shelby County: "It is also probable that Elias Spray was here as early as 1832." (History of Shelby County, OH, p. 231.)
Elias Spray's father made his will on 5 May 1833 in Randolph County, Indiana, which son James Spray disputed in court in Warren County, Ohio. In the will, Elias is said to be living with bothers William and James in Allen County, Ohio. The following was a part of the proceedings.
"Said James Spray at the time of his death left a widow Bridget Spray residing in Randolph County, Indiana and the following children, Grandchildren, Heirs legal representatives to-wit: Mary Whistle late Mary Spray, a daughter married to Samuel McKinsey, who with her husband resides in Montgomery County, Indiana; Thomas Spray, a son who resides west of the Wabash river in the State of Indiana, County not known; Elizabeth Lacy late Elizabeth Spray, a daughter and wife of your petitioner, John Lacey who resides with your petitioner in Wayne County, Indiana; William, Elias and James Spray sons all of who resides in Allen County, Ohio. Barnet Spray another son who is a minor under the age of twenty - one years and resides in Randolph County, Indiana. Said James Spray left the following grand-children of Benjamin Spray, a son of said James Spray whom his survived to-wit: Mary McCullough married to Samuel McCullough, Abigail married to Milton Howell, Noah and James Spray and one child whose name is to your petitioner unknown all of which last named grandchildren except Mary & Abigail are minor for whom Samuel McCullough is guardian and all of whom reside in Allen County, Ohio and all of grand children heirs devised widow and legal representatives they pray maybe made defendants hereto and that the court would appoint a guardian for the minor defendants." (Randolph County, Indiana, County Clerk. James Spray Estate Docket. Book 1 - page 204 - Docket No. 467 - File No. 4.)
On 7 Oct. 1835, Elias Hollingsworth Spray “of Shelby County, Ohio” purchased 40 acres of government land at Waupaukonetta, Ohio, for $1.25 per acre. Land agent A.J. Donelson signed the certificate on behalf of President Andrew Jackson. (Certificate No. 2724.) By the time of the 1840 census, however, Elias Spray (name misspelled as "Elish”) was living in Mc Donough Co, Illinois, where he was enumerated along with a probable relative or close friend John Barber. Elias, now age 30-40 years, was listed with a wife, age 30-40 years, one daughter 15-20 years, two sons 15-20 years, three daughters 10-15 years, one daughter 5-10 years, and two sons under 5 years. (1840 Census, Mc Donough Co, Illinois, p. 215. National Archives microfilm #M704 Roll #65.)
In the late 1840's there were miscellaneous efforts to bring folks to Texas. One of these groups was called the "Peter's Colony" and Elias acquired a headright from this group. The Patent was for 640 acres of land in what is now Fannin County, Texas. (Fannin District; Montague County, Texas; Page 527; Abstract No. 672; Original Grantee: Elias Spray dec'd; Patentee: Elias Spray; Patent Date: 26 Jun 1855; Patent No: 40; Vol. No. 12; 640 acres; Portion Adjoining County-Acres: County Fan. 3rd; File No. 1592. (Abstract of Original Texas Land Titles, http://www.ancestry.com/search/rectype/inddbs/5112.htm. [Accessed 8 Oct 2000])
The biographical sketch of Elias' son, James Hollingsworth Spray, by Martha Sherbine Southern, states that James “migrated with his family to Texas. There his father, mother and five children were killed from the dreadful disease ague.” The 1850 Mortality Schedule for Cooke Co.,Texas, offers the following support (Spray is misspelled Sproy):
<pre>
Sproy, Elias Cooke Co., TX 46 M Jan OH Unknown 01 1850

(US Mortality Schedules 1850-1885. Accelerated Indexing System 8/14.)
Thereafter, the minor children of Elias and Polly (Harris) Spray went to family or friends in Cooke and Grayson Counties, Texas. (Cooke Co., Texas, Probate Minutes Book 1, p. 5. [FHL 1290682.] Also see the 1850 Census, Cooke Co, TX, p. 70, line 34, #30/31 and the 1850 Census, Grayson Co, TX, p. 705, line 16, #197/198 [both county enumerations on National Archives microfilm #M432 Roll #910].)
Son Eli B. Spray (spelled “Spary”) sold his right to "his father's" land in Montague Co., Texas, to brother Samuel Spray. General Notes for Child James Hollingsworth Spray
James H. Spray
James H. Spray was born in Ohio on Feb. 24, 1829. He was the seventh child of ten sons and daughters of born to James S. [actually Elias H.] and Mary Harris Spray. He lived in his native state until a young man.
Then he migrated with his family to Texas. There his father, mother and five children were killed from the dreadful disease ague. When James was recovered, he started back alone to Ohio and succeeded in reaching Saline [actually Schuyler] County, Missouri, where on a very hot day he spied a girl on a dirt floor porch washing clothes and asked her for something to eat, which was very kindly given him. He was invited to stay and rest for a while, whereupon he abandoned his journey and never saw Ohio again, for this kind girl afterward proved to be my kind mother.
They were married January 18, 1851, and to them were born twelve children: Eliza Jane, born December 24, 1851; Sarah A., born May 11, 1854; Samuel L., born May 5, 1856; Mary E., born June 26, 1858; Emma E., born November 11, 1859; Thomas Lincoln, born June 16, 1862; Joseph W., born November 15, 1864; John H., born April 15, 1867; Eliza Bird, born March 26, 1869; Martha M., born June 14, 1871; George W., born July 25, 1872; and James S., born January 22, 1875.
Jane married Marion Dunn and was the mother of ten children. She later married Alvah Parke and had two children, a boy and a girl. She died in 1916 at the age of 64.
Sarah A. married James McDeed and was the mother of six children. She later married William Langford and had one child, a boy. She died in 1887 at age 33.
Samuel L. died in a snowslide on a hill close to Ennis in 1872. His brother Thomas Lincoln died in the same accident. Their ages were 15 and 9.
Emma E. married Frank Turner and became the mother ten children. She died in 1910 at 50 years of age.
Joseph W. married Mrs. Amanda Marsh at Virginia City in 1890. No children were born. He died in 1926 at 62.
John H. married Mrs. Sallie Gibbart at Billings. They had no children.
Eliza B., called Birdie, died at age of 18 months.
Martha M. married George Sherbine in 1892 in Bellevue, Idaho. She was the mother of 13 children. Her death occurred in 1961. A daughter, Martha Sherbine Southern, still resides in Bellevue.
George W. died a few hours after birth in 1872.
James S. married Jennie M. Crawford at Bozeman. They had no children. James wrote a family history which was published privately in 1930. Much of the material presented here is in his own words from that history. He died in 1956 at the Alder Rest Home, after spending most of his life in the Madison Valley.
The Sprays left Missouri in the latter 1850's and went to Nebraska, where they dug a well and named the place Freemont; it was in the vicinity where the town of Freemont now stands. They took the rails from Omaha to Ogden, Utah, then came by covered wagon and oxen to Alder Gulch, then on to the Madison Valley, where they wintered on the Simpson place 1871-72. The next spring they moved to the present Spray ranch (now own by L.M. Jeffers) and built a log house without any windows, where they lived for ten years. In the summer of 1872, Mr. Spray went horseback to Idaho, where he bought fourteen head of cattle and drove them to the Madison Valley via Henry's Lake. He then proceeded to raise and sell steers on a small scale; and was the first man in the valley to see money in steers.
Mrs. Spray was Miss Anna E. Newcomm before her marriage. She died May 15, 1885. Mr. Spray died June 8, 1888. They were the first parents to be buried in a cemetery in the Madison Valley. In 1899, their bodies were moved by their sons Jack and Jim from the Evans Cemetery east of Jeffers to the Primrose (now called Valley) Cemetery on the S.R. ranch.
